A pass by a vacant lot in the Pumphrey community Thursday night brought one woman more than she bargained for.
"A woman called in saying she saw a trash bag moving. When our officers got out there they opened the trash bag and found a mixed breed puppy in the bag," Corporal Jacklyn Davis, with the Anne Arundel County Police Department, said.
Corporal Davis said the puppy, which appeared to be a black and white terrier mix, was still alive.
Once animal control officers got here to the corner of Shenandoah and Gibbons Avenues, they took the puppy to the veterinarian, but it was too late.
Davis added there were no obvious signs of trauma to his body.
"When they opened the bag, they found a green granular substance. We're not sure what that is right now. It is being tested. A necropsy is also being done on the dog to see what the cause of death was.
Helen Davis lives nearby but had not heard about what happened. She has multiple dogs of her own.
"They're my children, they're my life, they're my babies. ... It's horrible. It's deplorable. I mean, I don't know how in the world anybody could do anything like that to an animal. I just don't know," she said.
The how will be determined but detectives are also working on the who and why.
Helen said she can't imagine any of the pet owners in the neighborhood being responsible for something so cruel.
"I hope they go to jail myself but, in the ultimate end honey they're going to have to pay for what they're doing because that's not right. That's a life. That's murder. That's a life," she said.
"There's all kind of shelters that you can give your animal to so this is obviously not the answer to getting rid of your pet," Corporal Davis said.
