Anne Arundel County police identify suspected shoplifter found dead in pond

HANOVER, Md. - Anne Arundel County police identified 26-year-old Tavon Talley as the suspected shoplifter who was found dead in a stormwater pond after running away from Arundel Mills Mall security. 

Anne Arundel County police spokesman Lt. T.J. Smith said Talley's next of kind were notified Tuesday. 

An update from police is expected Tuesday evening. 

At about 9 p.m. Monday, police and fire were dispatched to a stormwater pond near Arundel Mills Mall where a man had evaded mall security.

Mall security officers ran after one of the men and saw him go into a three-acre sediment pond at the corner of the Arundel Mills Mall parking lot, according to Anne Arundel County Police.

Police say security officers urged the man to stop swimming away and come back to the shore, but he didn’t. Security officers saw him dive under water in the pond, but didn’t see him resurface.

Police believe Talley and Tania Denice Turner, 26, stole from the Zumiez skate shop Monday night. Turner was charged with charged with theft less than $1,000 in connection with the shoplifting incident. 

Police said they found the stolen items on Talley's body when he was pulled from the water .
