Police-involved shooting leads to road closures at the University of Maryland in Baltimore

BALTIMORE - A police-involved shooting at the University of Maryland in Baltimore led to road closures around the campus Friday evening.

Baltimore police said around 1 p.m. university police got a call about an armed person near the hospital.

Officers searched the area and found a man with a knife in the 500 block of Russell Street.  The man was brandishing a knife and when he reached into his waistband, officers thought he was reaching for a gun, according to to Baltimore police. That's when a University of Maryland police officer shot the man in the leg.

"The suspect was struck at least one time in the leg with what we believe to be non life threatening injuries. None of the officers were injured. Both of the officers were in uniform and operating marked patrol vehicles," Sgt. Jarron Jackson said.

Sgt. Jackson said it is not clear yet if the suspect did indeed have a gun. He said he knows there were a lot of people driving by at the time and police are asking anyone who saw anything to call detectives.

"The missing piece that we need is what the public saw. So if they can contact us with any information that they have, that would be great," Sgt. Jackson told ABC2.
