Motorcyclist killed after running red light, hitting car in Howard County

A motorcyclist is dead after police say he ran a red light and hit a car.

Howard County Police say the crash happened just after 11 a.m. at the intersection of Route 40 and Rogers Avenue.

A release by the department says a police officer first saw the motorcycle speeding west on Route 40 near the Howard County line. The officer tried to stop the motorcycle, but the driver didn't stop and the officer had to stop the pursuit.

After the officer stopped following, the motorcycle continued to speed, running through a red light at the intersection of Route 40 and Normandy Drive, then again at Rogers Avenue, where he hit a car making a legal turn onto Route 40, police said.

Emergency crews took the driver of the car to Howard County General Hospital as a precaution. Police said they will not release the name of the motorcycle driver until his next of kin has been notified.
