Officials closed the westbound Interstate 70 bridge over the Patapsco River Friday afternoon just before rush hour, with the possibility that the bridge could be closed through the weekend.
Access ramps to I-70 from I-695 have also been closed.
According to a release from the State Highway Administration:
"SHA is erring on the side of caution and closing the bridge until repairs can be initiated," said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters. "SHA bridge inspectors discovered an issue with the beam that requires immediate attention. We are asking motorists for patience as emergency repairs are made."
SHA is adjusting the timing of traffic signals along US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) and MD 26 (Liberty Road) to accommodate the significant increase in traffic.
All westbound traffic on I-70 must exit onto I-695, according to the Coordinated Highways Action Response Team. Drivers can use either exit 18 onto Maryland Route 26 west to Maryland Route 32 south, or exit 15 onto US Route 40 west to US Route 29 north to access I-70.
