Baltimore officer charged with hitting person in police custody

BALTIMORE, Md. - A Baltimore City police officer has been charged with assault and misconduct one year after allegedly hitting a suspect who was already in police custody.

Serge Antonin, an officer with the Baltimore Police Department, is charged by criminal information with second-degree assault and two counts of misconduct in connection with the incident.

On July 29, 2013, Antonin allegedly hit a person who had been taken into custody by other members of law enforcement. He is scheduled for arraignment on Aug. 22.

The charges come after an internal investigation by the police department's Professional Standards and Accountability Bureau.

"We will not tolerate the actions of any officer that breaks the law, in order to enforce the law," Deputy Police Commissioner Jerry Rodriguez of the Professional Standards and Accountability Bureau said in a statement.  "The public expects, and we demand that our officers hold themselves to a higher standard."
