1 child dead, 1 critically injured in morning West Baltimore fire

A 7-year-old boy is dead and a second child is in critical condition after a fire inside a West Baltimore row home Monday morning.

A family member tells ABC2 News the critically injured child tried to save his two younger siblings from the burning home.

Before 2 a.m. Monday, Baltimore City firefighters were called to the 300 block of North Bruce Street.

When they arrived they found heavy smoke coming from a row home. Six people -- three children and three adults -- were inside the house when the fire broke out, according to fire department spokesman, Ian Brennan.

Fire officials say 7-year-old Sean McCullough died as a result of injuries sustained in the fire.

Neighbors tell ABC2 News the 8-year-old child, who is in critical condition at Johns Hopkins, dropped his 4-year-old sister out of a second-story window into the arms of family members or neighbors below then went back for his 7-year-old brother.

The youngest child is doing well and is with her family.

One firefighter also sustained minor injuries while fighting the fire, Brennan said.
