ELKTON, Md. (AP) -- Maryland State Police say a man who threw large rocks at motorists is in serious condition after being shot by a trooper in Cecil County.

Police say 50-year-old Clyde S. Patterson III of Perry Point threw rocks at drivers along Route 40 west of Red Toad Road on Tuesday night. One motorist said Patterson pulled out a gun.

Patterson also threw rocks at two troopers who arrived at the scene.

Police say the troopers stopped traffic in both directions as Patterson walked toward them. He refused to surrender and show his hands, then lunged toward Trooper First Class James L. Parker, who then fired his pistol.

Another trooper also deployed a Taser at Patterson.

Parker has been placed on routine administrative leave. Police are investigating the incident.
