50-Year-Old Water Main Breaks in Essex

Last Update: 11/19/2009 2:29 pm

Baltimore County Police have several roads in Essex closed down as public works crews work to repair a 12-inch water main that broke Thursday morning.

The main broke some time around 10 a.m. in the area of Stemmers Run Road and Old Eastern Avenue.

Police have shut roads down within a 2-mile radius of the break. Motorists are urged to avoid the area.

It is unclear at this time exactly what caused the break but Department of Public Works spokesman Kurt Kocher says crews re-surfacing the roads last night may have jarred something loose, causing the break.

Kocher says the break may not be fixed for another 24 hours.

Currently between 120 and 130 people are without water.
