A Pennsylvania woman was arrested at BWI Wednesday after TSA officials caught her trying to carry a gun beyond a security checkpoint.
The woman, from Lancaster County, Pa., was traveling with a male companion who, she said, had given her the 9 mm handgun as a gift. The gun was not loaded.
TSA officers detected the gun in the woman’s carry-on items as she was moving through security. The TSA contacted Maryland Transportation Authority Police, who responded to the scene, confiscated the weapon and arrested the woman on state weapons charges.
Firearms, firearm parts and ammunition are not permitted in carry-on bags, but can be transported in checked bags if they are unloaded, properly packed and declared to the airline. Travelers who bring firearms to the checkpoint are subject to possible criminal charges from law enforcement and civil penalties from TSA of up to $11,000.
