Safety tips for baby shopping

Maybe it's high-profile mothers-to-be like Duchess Catherine and Kim Kardashian, but a new wave of  high-end baby gear is making its way into magazines and stores.

But no matter your budget, when shopping for baby, safety comes first.

CNN has compiled some safety tips for parents shopping for both baby bling and baby on a budget.

Parents should do research on things like product recalls and industry safety clarification.

Consumers should also see the products assembled in the store. That way parents can look at hinges, springs and surfaces where an infant could come into contact.

Finally, parents should be careful about purchasing secondhand items that may not meet updated government safety standards.

CNN interviewed Dana Evans, owner of Daisy Baby. She says parents should also look for items that can be passed down to future parents.
