Baltimore pastor Jamal Bryant is running for Congress.

Bryant made the formal announcement Monday at a 10 a.m. press conference..

Earlier, he posted a message on Facebook, saying, "Monday meet me at 10 a.m. at 1505 Eutaw Place for my political announcement relative to the vision for this region... #pray. Some on his page are speculated he might be running for mayor.

A news release later shared cleared things up.

“After prayer, soul searching and long deliberation, I am officially- -announcing my candidacy for Congress of the United States representing the 7th Congressional District today at 10 a.m. at 1505 N. Eutaw Place. After the Freddie Gray uprising, the proliferation of police brutality across this nation, the lack of jobs, widespread poverty and hopelessness throughout our urban areas, I decided that leading a successful congregation and building a great church is not enough. I want to contribute to public policy in Washington” said Jamal Bryant Candidate for Congress.

“I am running for Congress because I believe people who care can find solutions to even the most difficult problems. I have never run away from a challenge. I face them head on. I am running because when we work together, I know from experience that there is no problem we can’t solve. I am running for Congress because I know who we are and what we are capable of doing together for the 7th Congressional District”.

“My intentions are to give a new voice to the issues that affect every day working men and working women by proposing new ideas. Unfortunately, many of the people I speak with every day want new leadership. There is an anti-incumbent sentiment that suggests that our current leaders are ineffective. I want to shift that paradigm and offer a ray of hope and some concrete solutions to their dismay.'

Dr. Jamal Harrison Bryant is the pastor of Empoerment Temple AME Church in Baltimore. He is a native Baltimorean and the son of Bishop John Richard Bryant and Rev. Cecilia Williams-Bryant. His father was elected Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in 1988.
