Online dating companies new screening methods

LOS ANGELES - When you submit a profile to an online dating service, how can you be sure you aren't hooking up with a sex offender?

Three of the bigger online dating companies are taking steps to make online matchups a little safer., eHarmony and Spark Networks have agreed to screen users for sex offenders.

The sites will also contact authorities if they suspect someone is doing something illegal on the site.

The announcement was made by the California attorney general's office -- and comes after a woman was assaulted while on a date that was set up online.

The California AG's office says last year, an estimated 40 million Americans used an online dating service and spent more than $1 billion on dating Web site memberships.
