College project aims at helping girls unable to attend their prom

With the sluggish economy, and the rising prices, a recent survey shows the average cost for a teen girl to attend her prom is $800.

In Howard County, a group of students are working to ensure high school girls who would have to forfeit this once-in-a lifetime opportunity will not have to do so this year.

Thanks to some students in a Hospitality Management class at Howard Community College, more than 40 local high school girls will be able to "shop" at no cost for a nearly-new prom dress.

They call their class project "The Perfect Prom Project."

The students have designed, created and planned the event for the girls to get everything they will need for their prom from dresses to shoes and accessories.

The prom dresses and accessories were collected through a donation drive held on campus.

When is it happening?

The high school girls will be styled and pampered by the college students and they will try on dresses Tuesday evening from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at a student designed boutique at the Rouse Company Student Services Hall.
