KANSAS CITY, Mo. - During the National Rifle Association convention in St. Louis over the weekend, rocker Ted Nugent made controversial comments about President Barack Obama and gun control.

"I will tell you this right now, Barack Obama becomes President in November again. I will guarantee you I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year," he said.

Jim McDuff with the Missouri Valley Arms Collectors Association doesn't support Nugent's statement, but he understands where it comes from.

"This Ted Nugent, what it's really (an) indication of is people are very concerned ... what happens after the election," McDuff said. "Obama feels like he doesn't have to answer to the American people."

Alvin Brooks is with the Ad Hoc Group Against Crime. He points out that according to Kansas City Missouri Police, 29 out of the 35 homicides reported so far this year involved firearms.

"Guns make you safer. That's a bigger lie than chicken little told," Brooks said. "In your homes? Yes. On the streets of America? That's really concerns me."

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney responded to Nugent's remarks Tuesday.

In an email sent to NBC News, a campaign spokesperson said, "Divisive language is offensive no matter what side of the political aisle it comes from. Mitt Romney believes everyone needs to be civil."
