For some, solutions to math problems come easily. For others, it can be a headache just to split a bill or balance a checkbook. Now new research shows doing math can really cause physical pain in some people.
Researchers at the University of Chicago found people solving tough equations showed the same brain activity linked to the sensation of pain. That activity became even more noticeable in people who admitted to having a fear of math.
More studies need to be done to confirm the conclusions.
