The Sparrows Point Country Club is looking to downsize, and get into the housing market. Over the past few years the country club in Dundalk has seen a drop in membership, making it difficult to keep up the facilities.

Now, in an attempt to stay afloat, the country club is planning to get rid of one third of its golf course to make room for more than 300 townhouses, detached homes and villas on its waterfront property.

The county club has submitted an application for planned unit development for "Country Club Estates." The proposal calls for 76 acres to be redeveloped, cutting the country club's golf course from 27 holes to 18. The homes would be organized into villages with pedestrian-friendly pathways and some houses would have waterfront views.

In their proposal the club said the project would provide much-needed housing for those in the area, including Tradepoint Atlantic employees. The country club has been in Dundalk for more than 60 years, originally built for Bethlehem Steel employees.

The next step will be a community input meeting with the Baltimore County Council. So far no date has been set.
