Dorothy, Rose, Sophia and Blanche of the hit sitcom The Golden Girls discussed everything over cheesecake; religion, relationships, finances, you name it. But what the foursome was probably most known for was touching on social issues, including same-sex marriage.
An episode featuring Sophia Petrillo and Blanche Devereaux made the rounds on the Internet Thursday, soon after President Obama gave his exclusive interview with ABC News about his support for same-sex marriage. Long before Obama's declaration of support and before it became a contentious issue on the campaign trail, The Golden Girls had their own hear-to-heart about the issue.
In the episode, Petrillo explains why Devereaux should be happy that her gay brother is getting married. She says, "Everyone wants someone to grow old with, and shouldn't everyone have that chance?"
It just goes to show that whether you agree with them or not, the senior ladies of Miami talked about issues ahead of their time. And almost three decades later, they are still as relevant today as when they hit the small screen in 1985.
