Rutgers coach abrasive nature early in career

PITTSBURGH, Pa - Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice was fired Wednesday after video showed him hitting, shoving and berating his players with anti-gay slurs. Rice's abrasive behavior may have been apparent early in his career.

Rice once knocked out one of his father's teeth while they were playing against each other. Former Assistant Coach Andy Toole, who coaches at Robert Morris, called Rice "crazed" by the game.

Jamie Dixon hired Mike Rice as an assistant at Pittsburgh back in 2006. "I think the people know him here, they know he's a good person," Dixon said. "He's acknowledged he's made some mistakes."

The video drew outrage on campus and even lawmakers. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie supporting the firing.

Rice's firing means Rutgers has now seen its last four coaches dismissed for poor decisions and controversy, rather than simply wins and losses.
