Report: 101 people found alive amid Moore Oklahoma tornado rubble

MOORE, Okla. - The state medical examiner's office has revised the death toll from a tornado in an Oklahoma City suburb to 24 people, including seven children.

Spokeswoman Amy Elliot said Tuesday morning that she believes some victims were counted twice in the early chaos of the storm. Authorities said initially that as many as 51 people were dead, including 20 children.

Citing officials with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, the NBC affiliate in Oklahoma City, KFOR, is reporting search crews found 101 people alive overnight amid the rubble.

Officials planned a noon news conference Tuesday at the storm command center to provide updates on conditions. Emergency officials may have a new death toll at the briefing.

The tornado flattened homes and hit two elementary schools head-on around 3 p.m. Monday.

Rescue crews are now making their second sweep in affected neighborhoods, focusing on storm shelters where people may be trapped.

Among the dead are 12 adults in Moore and seven children from Plaza Towers Elementary School.  Five people in Oklahoma City were killed, including one child.

KFOR reported Monday the search and rescue effort at Plaza Towers transitioned to a recovery effort. The seven victims there were found dead Monday evening in a pool of water in the elementary school rubble.  Moore police now say everyone at this school has been accounted for.
All students of Briarwood Elementary School in Moore were accounted for by Monday evening.

The AP is reporting the Moore Medical Center also sustained damage. All 13 patients were apparently transferred to other facilities.

President Barack Obama declared a major disaster in Oklahoma late Monday night, and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts.

The National Weather Service is reporting the tornado reached wind speeds of up to 200 mph and was at least an EF-4. KFOR reports the storm ravaged roughly 30 square miles.
