Questions raised about electronic medical records

WASHINGTON - For some, the idea of having electronic medical records replace paper ones is an idea that's long overdue.

But there are some who are warning the new way of recording and sharing information about patient health may not work as well as first thought.

Independent advisers are warning the Obama administration the benefits of e-charts shouldn't be taken for granted.

For example the advisers say things like computer crashes and technology that doesn't play well together can lead to a variety of problems. They include medication dosing errors, the possibility of overlooking a potentially fatal illness -- or delays in needed treatment.
