It can be difficult for parents to get their kids to eat healthier at home, and now schools are having to take on the challenge in their cafeterias. A new federal mandate is hoping to change the way our kids think about food.
New guidelines of the National School Lunch and Breakfast program went into effect this year that requires schools to serve more nutritious meals, according to the USDA. It means more vegetables, fruits, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. It also puts a limit on the carbs and protein offered.
Students may also notice the portion sizes are smaller than they're use to seeing. It's all part of the new standards that seek to get kids to understand proper portions and proper eating habits.
Popular school menu items like pizza and fries will still be available to students.
