Mother can't find ethnic, Barbie-themed party products, starts petition to Mattel

Mom takes on Mattel

A mother is taking on Barbie's creator Mattel because of its lack of diversity in its Barbie-themed party favors.

Karen Braithwaite says it all started when she wanted to throw her daughter a black Barbie-themed party, according to the New York Observer .  Even though Mattel makes a diverse line of dolls, Braithwaite says she could not find any party supplies with black Barbies on them.

Troubled by the lack of diverse products, Braithwaite started an online petition on Change.org, asking Mattel to create more multicultural Barbie accessories.  As of Thursday morning, it had about 4,600 signatures.

A Mattel spokeswoman sent a statement to the Observer, saying they work with different partners to develop Barbie-themed products and they will share the feedback from Braithwaite with those partners.
