Now that the weather is getting colder, the kids are probably spending more time inside, and they're most likely using the computer more.
Although it's difficult to police every second of their internet use, there are some things you can do to keep your kids safe while they surf.
- Warn them about internet predators in places like chat rooms. Advise them not to post pictures or personal information.
- Experts say the key to keeping your child safe on the internet is communication.
"Have a regular discussion with them about what they're doing on the internet," says Dr. Emma Raizman of the Cleveland Clinic. "What kinds of things are you sending out? What websites are you going to? And just talking to them regularly, you can keep up that communication and teach them some good, healthy habits, so that they don't get victimized on the internet."
- Experts say no child between the ages of 3 and 10 should be surfing the internet alone
