A Senate committee is giving the government more time to come up with a proposal to build a new headquarters for the FBI. The Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works approved giving the General Services Administration another two months to come up with a plan on how to restart the project.

Back in July the GSA announced it was pulling the plug on the search for a new location, saying Congress had not set aside enough funding to continue planning. The news came more than five years after a government watchdog group determined the FBI had outgrown the aging J. Edgar Hoover building.

The GSA now has until January 29, 2018 to submit its report on building and financing options for the headquarters, as well as what has already been done that could help cut costs for the project.

Greenbelt and Landover, Maryland as well as Springfield, Virginia were all on the short list of possible locations before the search was called off.
