Employers could ask why women are on the pill

A proposed law in Arizona would give employers the right to ask women why they are on birth control. State lawmakers are considering the bill to give employers the option to deny women contraception coverage,  if they are morally or ethically opposed to the use of birth control for whatever reason..

Arizona already has a law that allows religious employers to deny coverage for moral reasons. The new bill is an expansion of it.

The American Civil Liberties Union says this violates women's rights. Women who need to use birth control for health reasons would be allowed coverage but they would have to say why. The ACLU says a women should not have to tell her employer why she is using contraception.

The bill passed in the House and a Senate Judiciary Committee. It is now headed to the full State Senate. If it passes there, it goes back to the House before heading to the Governor's desk.
