The Delaware State trooper shot and killed at a Wawa convenience store has been identified as Cpl. Stephen J. Ballard.

The 32-year-old served on the force for nearly 9 years.

Ballard walked up to a vehicle in the parking lot with two suspicious people inside. Police say one man got out of the car and shot Ballard several times. The other man was arrested at the scene.

This all happened around noon at the 1605 Pulaski Highway location in Newark.

Police were outside of the suspect's home Wednesday night, as he barricaded himself inside with a weapon. The suspect fired at officers and refused to surrender.

Police said they identified the man, but are not releasing his name yet.

One witness told police he was stopped at a red light when he heard a gun shot and saw Ballard fall to the ground. The witness said a man then got out of the car and shot the officer several times while he was on the ground.
