Controversial bill aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration

Key parts of law to take effect

PHOENIX - What will become of Arizona's controversial immigration law?

Arizona Governor Jan Brewer and Attorney General Tom Horne plan to hold a news conference this afternoon to discuss their next steps in Senate bill 1070.

Demonstrators have taken to the streets across the country opposing and supporting the bill.
A ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last month prevented key parts of the law from going into effect.

Among other things, it would have required local law enforcement to apprehend and help deport illegal immigrants. The Justice Department sued and argued that only the federal government has that authority.

Brewer's legal team could ask the court to revisit the issue, take the case directly to the U.S. Supreme Court, or choose to do nothing at all.
