Aurora shooting in political spotlight

AURORA, Colo. -  

One of the people who nearly died in July when a gunman opened fire in a Colorado movie theater is becoming the focus of the presidential race.

Stephen Barton was one of the 58 people hurt in the shooting in the summer.

Now he is the focus of a new ad aimed at both presidential candidates, pushing them to come up with a plan to reduce gun violence.

The ad is sponsored by "Mayors against illegal guns" a coalition of 725 mayors, including Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and Annapolis Mayor Josh Cohen.

And while the economy is the hot topic on the campaign trail, the Mayor's want the issue of guns tackled.

Eight families who lost loved ones in the theater shooting are urging moderator Jim Lehrer to ask President Obama and Governor Romney about gun violence during Wednesday night's debate.
