Leaky roofs

Locating leaks in your roof can test your investigating skills. Noticing discolored walls, ceilings, peeled wallpaper, cracked paint, or a damp smell may be your first clue to a leak. The leak may actually be far from the real problem. If your attic is unfinished, look at the underside of your roof and visually determine where the water is entering your home. Remember to use caution if handling fiberglass insulation when checking for dampness. If your attic is finished, first examine plumbing as a possible cause of the moisture. After ruling out potential leaks from the inside of your home, check the roof for loose, torn, warped, or cupped shingles. These may leak during rain. Another source of leaks may be the sealant around the flashing. Make sure the caulking around vents and chimneys is in good condition. If the leak persists, contact a roofing specialist for assistance.
