How to be a better shopper

Here are some tips to help you become a better shopper. An important step is to shop at discount stores whenever possible, from large chain outlets to bargain close-out type establishments. Such places often have similar or identical quality items as large department stores, at a fraction of the cost. Buy items on sale when you can or during the off-season. However, don't buy anything you don't really need, no matter how good a deal it may seem. You can stretch your food dollar by clipping coupons or buying store brands. Also, visit several grocery stores in your area to compare prices. The price difference from one food store to another can vary as much as 10 to 15 percent. To avoid impulse purchases, take a grocery list and never shop when you're hungry. At any store, always watch the price that comes up on register as you check out, particularly for items that are supposed to be on sale. Cashiers can make mistakes and sometimes the sale price may not be entered in the computer.
