Just like people and pets, cell phones don't fare well in heat

Ouch!

My cell phone got really hot the other day after I carelessly left it baking in the sun. I was simply just charging my phone. 

The image on this page is a screenshot of the warning message which appeared. My iPhone unknowingly roasted in the car for about 30 minutes.

I uploaded the picture on my Facebook page for a few laughs. A few viewers experienced similar results on occasion with their iPhones, Androids and other smart phones.

One Facebook friend said her phone completely fried in the heat! She was listening to music with her phone while sunbathing at the pool. Even keeping the phone in the shade, it died after about an hour in the 100° weather. Another FB friend had issues with his phone after he left it too close to the barbecue grill.

A viewer posted the specifications for the operating conditions of an iPhone:

Operating temperature: 32° to 95° F
Nonoperating temperature: -4° to 113° F
Relative humidity: 5% to 95% noncondensing
Maximum operating altitude: 10,000 feet (3000 m)

A safe assumption is that the temperature inside my car was obviously higher than 113°! 

Temperatures inside of a car can easily climb over 140° on a sunny day.

But my phone survived. After it displayed the warning message I turned it off and placed it in front of the air conditioner. Within 10 minutes, the phone returned to normal. No damage done. Lesson learned!

Keep in mind that even using your phone as normal while exercising in the heat can cause problems, especially with these 100° temperatures. Keep your phone shaded if you can. The glass casing heats up more quickly in direct sunlight.

Older cell phones from past years were more heat tolerant, but they also weren't mini-computers either.

My education for the day: I learned that an iPhone can sense the temperature without using an app. Now, that's why the iPhone is a SMART phone. ;)
