We have a storm moving in from the south and west. It will provide us with plain rain which has been the trend for the majority of January.
The system that is knocking on our doorstep has plenty of moisture with it but as you well know you can't get snow without the cold air and that is what this storm is lacking. Sound familiar? Other storms this month have had the cold air but not a lot of moisture. When you lack any of the fore mentioned ingredients you will end up with no white stuff.
In the storm on January 21, 2011, both the moisture and the cold air came together (at least for a few hours) before the temperature started to warm up in the different levels of the atmosphere allowing for sleet to mix in with the snow. This scenario happens quite a bit in Maryland. It is called being on the rain/snow line.
It looks like January will go out like a lamb and the beginning of February will be unseasonably mild. Mother Nature is tricky and very powerful, so just remember we can and will get snow before the season is over!
