BALTIMORE - While a lot of people up and down the east coast are still without power, it's time to start rebuilding for those that do.

If your roof was damaged, or your car, or even your entire house, we've got 10 tips to help you rebuild after Hurricane Irene.

  • Tip #1 - Take pictures of any damage as soon as you can after the storm.   When you contact your insurance agent, you will definitely need pictures that show exactly what happened.
  • Tip #2 - When looking for a contractor, make sure to get references and pricing from several different companies before making a decision about who to give your business to.
  • Tip #3 - Check the building codes for your county and city.  Codes may have changed since you built or purchased your home and you don't want to end up with a rebuilt roof that's not up to code.
  • Tip #4 - If you have to rebuild, take it as an opportunity to research what kinds of options you might have for impact-resistant building products.  This way, if another hurricane comes, you'll be ready.
  • Tip #5 - If you're doing any kind of foundation work, ask your contractor to use additional foundation reinforcements.
  • Tip #6 - Choose exterior materials products to rebuild the outside of your home.  This is especially important if you live on the coast.
  • Tip #7 - When choosing products, also think about energy efficiency.  They can be a bit more expensive, but in the long run, it will save you on energy bills.
  • Tip #8 - If you're doing some serious rebuilding, think about adding a safe room if you live in a hurricane or disaster prone area.
  • Tip #9 - Pay the most attention to the products you choose for your roof, windows, doors, and garage doors.
  • Tip #10 - Take your time.   Don't rush through the rebuilding process.
