SHREWSBURY, Pa. - UPDATE -- It's hard to believe, looking at the photographs, but there were no fatalities or life-threatening injuries that resulted from the 10-vehicle accident on Interstate 83, just north of Shrewsbury, Pa., according to a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
A tractor trailer, carrying a load of plywood, failed stop in slowed traffic and set off a chain reaction that severe damaged five passenger cars, three other tractor-trailers and a flatbed truck carrying two more passenger cars, spokeswoman Fritzi Schreffler said.
The accident occurred at about 1:30 p.m. at mile marker 9, between Glen Rock and Loganville.
Seven people in total were transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Southbound lanes were re-opened at 5 p.m. Northbound lanes were expected to re-open sometime between 8 and 8:30 p.m., Schreffler said.
ORIGINAL -- Pennsylvania police and firefighters have shut down a segment of Interstate 83 near Shrewsbury for a massive multi-vehicle accident.
The number and severity of injuries is unknown at this time.

The accident involving a tractor trailer was first reported at about 3 p.m. Thursday between Glen Rock and Loganville.
