TOWSON, Md. -- Darren Schmidt, a senior at Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts, and Elisa Rowe, a senior at Kenwood High School, have been selected as Baltimore Ravens Champion Athletes of the Week and will be honored at the September  10 Baltimore Ravens game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the first game of the season.

For this honor, Schmidt and Rowe will receive tickets to the game, a VIP pre–game tour, Ravens jerseys, recognition on the RavensVision board and Ravens Web site, and $500 each for their schools.

In nominating Schmidt to the Baltimore Ravens, Patapsco Athletic Director Chris McGuinness wrote, “Without showing stress over the many demands of a full load of AP and gifted and talented classes, Darren maintains a 4.0 GPA, is ranked first in his class of 354, and has involvement in extracurricular activities that is unmatched. Darren leads our marching band, sings in our school gospel choir, sings in the Maryland State Boys’ Choir, is involved in his church’s youth group, and completes numerous community service projects. Aside from those activities, Darren has been our starting varsity goalie over the last three years and has made countless saves. Darren is a leader by example: quiet and modest. Darren also plays second base on our baseball team.”

According to Kenwood’s athletic director, Derek Maki, Rowe is a four–year soccer and lacrosse player, including two years on each of the varsity soccer and lacrosse teams. Her GPA currently ranks her in the top five percent of Kenwood’s senior class. She plans to study athletic training or nursing in college. In addition to her school activities, Rowe participates in many community/charity events such as the Race for the Cure and Bowling for Cancer, and she teaches religious education classes at the church she attends.
