BALTIMORE - Some fans are stinking mad over the Baltimore Orioles playoff ticket policies. ABC2 has been getting emails for days from people wanting to know why the team and Ticketmaster refuse to refund a $6 service charge. So we took their concerns right to the top with the Maryland Attorney General.
Many of us rushed to our computers to buy a seat in Camden Yards for a playoff game. In many cases, we bought tickets to games that were never played. For those unplayed games, the Orioles and Ticketmaster refunded the face value of the ticket as well as a ticket convenience fee.
However, fans who bought tickets did not get refunds on a fee for processing, shipping and handling that amounts to $6 per order. We asked Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler if fans have any recourse in getting that money back. Gansler says, unfortunately, in this case buyers are essentially out of luck because they were told upfront about the fee and refund policies. He explains, "If they charged you X dollars and didn't tell you that was the ticket price plus the service charge and then didn't return the service charge portion, that would be illegal."
Gansler says that wasn't the case here because that fee was explained with the order. But this isn't the first time a Major League Baseball team has heard this kind of complaint. The New York Yankees used to have the same playoff ticket policy. But in 2002, then New York Attorney General Elliott Spitzer went to the Yankees front-office and complained. In an agreement, 90-percent of those fees were returned to Yankee fans.
