Chinese state media say 11 children have died after a van plunged into a roadside pond in the east of the country.

The official Xinhua News Agency said Monday that three children died at the scene of the accident in a rural area of Jiangxi province and another eight children died later in hospital.

It says the van was carrying 15 kindergarten kids.

Xinhua says police have detained the driver for questioning and are investigating the cause of the accident.
