ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- The U.S. Naval Academy has announced a new commandant, who is responsible for the day-to-day conduct and training of midshipmen.
The academy said Thursday that Capt. Bill Byrne will be the 85th Commandant of Midshipmen.
Byrne is a graduate of the class of 1987.
The commandant is responsible for the military and professional development of more than 4,400 students. The post is similar to a dean of students at a civilian university.
Byrne will replace Capt. Robert E. Clark II, who will leave the academy later this spring.
Byrne is currently serving as Chief of Staff for Commander, U.S. Third Fleet in San Diego.
