Thousands of BGE customers lose power

Baltimore Electric and Gas (BGE) experienced more than 4,000 power outages Wednesday afternoon and evening due to strong wind and rain in the area.

While snow and slush dominated conversations in the area , high wind and rain in the area Wednesday afternoon was actually what was to blame. Much of Maryland was under a wind advisory Wednesday afternoon and into the evening hours.

Wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour were forecast heading into Thursday, and BGE officials said such a scenario could result in more outages due to downed trees, limbs, lines and equipment. Such would also limit the work of crews working on power restoration.

For safety reasons, work involving bucket trucks cannot be performed when there are sustained winds of 25 miles per hour or more.

“We are currently responding to weather-related outages on our system and restoring service as safely and quickly as possible. We also continue to monitor a weather system that is expected to bring rain, potential snow and high wind and wind gusts beginning tomorrow morning,” said Jeannette M. Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE.
