The state senate is set to vote today, on its version of the controversial "pit bull" bill.

The bill passed in a preliminary vote Tuesday.

 

It extends "strict liability" to owners of all dogs, not only pit bull owners.

 

That means if your dog bites someone, that person can sue you and you would have to prove you didn't know your dog was dangerous in order to defend yourself from a lawsuit.

 

That's different from what the house of delegates passed unanimously last month.

 

This raises the possibility that a compromise might not happen.

 

If that's the case, the current law singling out pit bulls will stay in effect.
