Teen uses bullying experience to spread message

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. - A teenager who lives just across the Maryland line is helping to rally nearly 200 people Friday night to fight a growing type of bullying around the U.S.

Lexi Openshaw took on a mission within the past year to stop bullying and the growing trend of cyber bullying on social network websites like Facebook. She joined ABC2 News', Megan Pringle , on Friday morning on Good Morning Maryland's ABC2 News to talk about the walk and her mission.

Openshaw will speak about ways to end both types of bullying Friday night in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The walk will start at 8 p.m. at St. Agnes Church on Duke St. Openshaw, Miss Jefferson County’s Outstanding Teen 2012, is only in the 8th grade.

Deputies at Frederick County Sheriff's office say Openshaw is a role model for other students her age. Deputies in Frederick County have been very supportive of Openshaw's efforts and say the teenager has been instrumental in getting the word out a growing issue among teenagers around the country.

Openshaw knows first hand just how much of an issue bullies can be.

“In less than one year, my younger brother and I were both victims of bullying.  Our parents helped us through it and now I want to help others.  The first step to ending it, is to stand united against all forms of bullying,” Openshaw said.

Those attending the walk are asked to wear purple to support the victims of bullying. Openshaw added, “So many kids in Jefferson County have been bullied and it’s time for their wounds to heal.”  

Refreshments will be served in the Parish Center after the walk.  Glow sticks will be handed out to everyone walking.
