CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - A lawyer representing a former University of Virginia lacrosse player says his client didn't intend to kill his girlfriend last May.

Francis Lawrence made the comment during Monday's preliminary hearing for George Huguely.

Huguely, of Chevy Chase, Md., is charged with the May 3, 2010, killing of 22-year-old Yeardley Love of Cockeysville, Md.

Love, who played for the university's women's lacrosse team, was found dead in her Charlottesville apartment. Huguely is accused of kicking in Love's door and slamming her head into a wall.

Huguely has been in jail since his arrest and did not attend Monday's hearing.

Lawrence says he will show that her death was unintentional.

Love's mother issued a statement earlier Monday saying the family had faith in the justice system and trusts truth will prevail.
