Local officials release statements on CT school shooting

MARYLAND (WMAR) - Several state and local officials including Governor Martin O'Malley, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman have released statements following the tragedy in Connecticut.
Governor Martin O'Malley today issued the following statement on the tragedy in Connecticut:
"The loss of innocent lives today in the shootings in Connecticut are tragic beyond words. Katie and I send our thoughts and prayers to those who lost loved ones in this heartbreaking tragedy.
"It's incomprehensible to even attempt to understand the pain these families are feeling today, especially the speechless pain of losing a child. We encourage everyone to keep the victims and their families in their thoughts and prayers."
Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown today released the following statement today on the tragedy in Connecticut:
"Our prayers are with the children, families, and educators of Sandy Hook Elementary School and all who were affected by today's horrific events. Violence is always senseless, but violence against children is even more difficult to understand - here in Maryland and across the country, we grieve for those whose lives were tragically cut short. And as a father, my thoughts are with the parents who will be forced to bear this terrible burden. We pray for them and for the entire community of Newtown, Connecticut."
Maryland Senator Ben Cardin issued the following the statement on today's tragic shooting in Newton, Connecticut.
"My prayers and thoughts of deep reflection are with all those shaken by the senseless and tragic events that took place in Newtown, Connecticut, today. Time and time again our national conscious has been rocked by tragic events such as this and time and time again we have rallied around those affected and emerged stronger. I am stricken with a sense of disbelief that such heinous attacks could be perpetrated against the most vulnerable and innocent Americans, especially in a place of learning."
County Executive Ken Ulman Issued this statement on the Connecticut school shootings:
"The elementary school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut remind us in the grimmest way possible that unspeakable tragedy can strike at any time, and can shatter our safest places.
Nothing is more important than the security of our children, and the Howard County Police Department will make frequent checks of every elementary and middle school in the county on Monday and throughout the week. I know the Howard County Public School System is providing resources to pupils and families.
On a personal note, as a father of two young daughters, my heart is heavy tonight as our family tries to make sense of these mindless killings. For now, we must embrace our children, tell them we love them, and move forward together to try to understand what happened and how to prevent it in the future."
