Prince George's council supports 5-cent bag tax

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) -- The Prince George's County Council has voted in support of legislation that would create a 5-cent disposable bag tax like the ones in the nation's capital and Montgomery County.
The council on Tuesday voted 8-0 in support of the plan. The General Assembly would still have to approve a bill that would give the county the right to impose the tax.
Democratic Councilmember Mary Lehman is backing the legislation that is similar to a bill that passed the Maryland Senate last year, but didn't make it out of the House of Delegates. Officials have said having the tax could cut down on the county's environmental cleanup costs.
