View the Emancipation Proclamation at the Library of Congress

While visiting D.C. to catch the historic re-inauguration of President Obama, you can also see history that is 150 years old.

The Library of Congress will be displaying the First Draft of the Emancipation Proclamation until February 18.  It is part of “The Civil War in America” exhibit.

View the exhibit from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

See a complete collection of presidential portraits, and “meet” George and Martha Washington and Abraham and Mary Lincoln at special tours.  These famous Americans may even share their inaugural experiences.

The gallery is open from 11:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily

Presidential Campaigns and the Press at the Newseum 

If you love the thrill of the campaign trail, you’ll enjoy “Every Four Years, Presidential Campaigns and the Press” at the Newseum. 

This exhibit will interactively show how the media coverage of the campaign has changed over the years. Stop by and see a microphone used by FDR to deliver his “fireside chats,” a handwritten note from John F. Kennedy during a presidential debate with Richard Nixon, and even the outfit worn by Tina Few as Sarah Palin in a 2008 “Saturday Night Live” sketch.

The exhibit is open until January 27.

First Ladies exhibit at the National Museum of American History

See more than 2-dozen gowns worn by the first ladies, china from the White House, and more about America’s first ladies.  When you’re done with the exhibit you could even stop by “The American Presidency: A Glorious Burden” to find out more about their husbands.

Visit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

Celebrate our nation’s first black president by visiting the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial. It is located on the northwest corner of the Tidal Basin, at Independence Avenue.
