LUSBY, Md. (WMAR) - According to PETA, Calvert County officials have removed sick and injured rabbits from Bunny Magic Wildlife & Rabbit Rescue Inc., in Lusby.

PETA says after they received a whistleblower report, investigators entered the facility and found animal neglect, including rabbits kept in crowded, stacked cages in their own waste in a dark garage and shed.

Investigators with PETA documented rabbits that were being denied veterinary care for serious medical conditions, including a rabbit that was so afflicted by disease that her neck was twisted nearly 180 degrees, leaving her struggling to stand.

PETA submitted evidence to county officials and the office of the State's Attorney, which opened a criminal investigation.

Some of the rabbits were found with abscesses, disease, trauma, painfully overgrown nails and eyes sealed shut by discharge. Dead rabbits were also found in a freezer.
