In a special press conference Monday, Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley said the state is in the crosshairs of Hurricane Sandy .
The storm is expected to make landfall early tomorrow morning, and it's strengthening as it is beginning to wash away Maryland beaches.
"This intensity will continue for a long period of time," O'Malley said.
The governor said the closure of the Bay Bridge is anticipated . He advised roads should be kept clear for the next 24-36 hours. He said Sandy will come over the state and sit on top of it.
"Trees will come down and power will be lost," O'Malley said.
The governor said he had just been briefed on the latest development of the storm -- a shift that would bring the most intense winds to the state. He said Sandy will be a storm to remember, much in the same category of Gloria and Agnes -- if not worse.
"There will be people who will die and are killed in this storm," he said.
Currently, Ocean City, Maryland is under heavy attack from Sandy , and the heart of the storm is still about a day away. Streets are flooded, and the inlet pier has been destroyed. The area near the pier is under a mandatory evacuation.
"I think we heard it is half gone," he said.
