SMITHSBURG, Md. - The Washington County Sheriff's office says officers shot and critically wounded a man at a park-and-ride lot near Smithsburg after he pointed a gun at them.
Washington County Sheriff Douglas Mullendore says 45-year-old James Jacob Jardina was shot at least twice in the upper torso and hip areas. He was reported in critical condition Sunday following surgery at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
Mullendore says the officers, a deputy and a Maryland Natural Resources Police officer, have been placed on administrative leave, which he said is routine following a police-involved shooting. The sheriff did not identify the officers.
The sheriff's office said the shooting occurred about 1 a.m. Sunday after police received a call from the man's wife saying he had called her threatening suicide.
