CHARLESTON, S.C. -- During a routine patrol, Charleston police officers happened upon a man they say is wanted in Maryland for prostitution and human trafficking.
According to a police report, two officers were patrolling the parking lot of the Motel 6 on Savannah Highway in Charleston, SC when they saw a woman standing next to a silver Malibu. Police say as they approached, the woman walked off and they noticed the driver sitting in the car.
Officers noted that the location is known for drug and prostitution activity, so they decided to "make contact" with the driver, identified as Daniel Burton.
According to the report, Burton lied to police about his identity and appeared nervous, not making eye contact, shaking and his voice sounded "unsure of what he was saying." A phone call from Burton's fiance on his cell phone revealed his real name and that he moved to Charleston from Maryland.
Officers say they ran his name and found out he was wanted in Maryland for prostitution and human trafficking.
Police say they searched Burton and his car and found a total of $14,888.04, both on his person and hidden in a purple Hennessy box in his trunk. They say they also found women's clothing and shoes that were all different sizes "belonging to several different individuals."
While all of this was going on, the woman police initially saw, identified as Jessica Leaphart, was reportedly standing around watching the activity, even after police told her she was free to leave. They eventually turned their attention to her and asked her if she had anything illegal in her room.
Police say she told them she had marijuana in her room as well as cocaine, which they found when she let them search her room. She was arrested for simple possession.
Police say Daniel Obrian Burton will be extradited to Maryland for the warrants against him.
